Darren is a Trustee of the Florence Nightingale Museum, inspired in no small part by his family connections to the nursing profession. As a result of these links BLF worked to develop the exhibition Florence Nightingale: A Living Portrait at Cromford Mills in Derbyshire that re-examined one of history’s most influential figures. Set in the landscape where Nightingale spent her childhood, the exhibition invited visitors to explore her life, ideas, and enduring legacy in a fresh and thought-provoking way. Moving beyond a single heroic narrative, it revealed the many facets of her character and considered how social and historical contexts shaped our understanding of the past. Through innovative graphic installations and layered interpretation, the exhibition deconstructed Nightingale’s image into four themes: Angel, Hero, Feminist, and Rebel, encouraging reflection and debate. The journey culminated in a striking digital ‘living portrait’, which evolved in response to visitors’ reflections, allowing each person to form their own image of Nightingale. Developed in collaboration with the Florence Nightingale Museum team the exhibition was also recognised with a 2025 Red Dot Design Award.
